The Marston Group recently sponsored and attended an evening with Hall-of-Fame Coach Larry Brown, benefitting Coaching for Literacy and its partners, the Memphis Teacher Residency and Streets Ministries. This fundraising event was held on September 9th, 2014 at the Memphis Botanic Garden, and was emceed by Rick Trotter, the voice of the Memphis Grizzlies.
Several of the firm’s top management attended this inaugural event to promote literacy in Memphis youth through sports. The guest of honor was Coach Larry Brown, the only coach in basketball history to win both the NCAA National Championship (University of Kansas) and the NBA Championship (Detroit Pistons). He was interviewed by Gary Parrish of CBS Sports.
There was also an education panel made up of the Board of Education Superintendent, Dorsey Hopson; Teach for America Teacher Manager, Modesto Montero; and Achievement School District Superintendent, Chris Barbic.
Supporting education in Memphis is a huge part of TMG’s overall mission. Several staff members have family and friends that are either teachers or students in the Memphis City School System, so attending events and supporting organizations like Coaching for Literacy and Teach for America is very important to our firm.
The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate, as well as the social problems associated with illiteracy. By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy provides financial support for effective local literacy programs that are focused on educating elementary and middle school students.
